Memorial Wall on Dahlonega Campus

At the University of North Georgia, service isn’t what we do, it’s who we are. This commitment is etched into the very stone of the Memorial Wall. It stands as a silent memorial to those former students who died for their country to preserve the light of freedom and was expanded to honor the memory of those passed while enrolled as a student.

Annually in April, we honor those alumni and students that we have lost, by reading their names to consecrate the memorial. Other campus ceremonies, wreath layings and commemorative events bring students, alumni, faculty and community members together at the site for moments of reflection on the legacy of those honored.

About the Memorial Wall

Dahlonega Architect Steve Gallant designed the memorial for the Alumni Council. The stones were cut, finished, and erected under the direction of Mr. Joe Findley, President, Elberton Granite and Finishing Works, Elberton, Georgia.

On April 30, 1983, Dr. John H. Owen, President, of then-North Georgia College, and General William J. Livsey, Class of 1952, dedicated this Memorial.

In 1985, Mr. Robert L. Owens, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department, North Georgia College was commissioned to sculpture an eagle to be cast in bronze and added to the Memorial site. Mr. Chad Colley, Class of 1966, dedicated this eagle, “Freedom’s Vigil.”
