In early nickelodeon theaters, which flourished from 1905 until about 1917, illustrated songs had equal billing with motion pictures. An illustrated song was presented by a singer with piano accompaniment using a set of hand-colored photographic slides that depicted the song's narrative. The final slide always included the words to the chorus and an exhortation for the audience to join in. While the initial purpose of illustrated songs was to advertise newly published compositions, they came to serve as a powerful force for Americanization. Immigrants in US cities would attend nickelodeon programs to learn about culture, customs, and fashion, while the illustrated song was an opportunity to practice English. This presentation will include a dozen illustrated songs presented with piano accompaniment, combining popular favorites like "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" with now-forgotten songs--both sentimental and humorous--that reflect on city life, childhood, romance, and gender roles.

Music Theatre Ensemble Fall Show

This is the annual Concerto/Aria Competition. Students will compete for the opportunity to perform with a
major ensemble. This event is open to the public.

This program celebrates the rich tradition of the piano quintet, bringing together University of North Georgia faculty and distinguished guest artists for two of the genre's most celebrated masterpieces.

Written a generation apart, Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44 and Dvořák's Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 81 reveal the remarkable expressive range of the ensemble. Schumann's work is marked by dramatic intensity, rhythmic vitality, and symphonic breadth, while Dvořák's quintet combines lyrical warmth and vibrant energy with the distinctive character of Czech musical traditions.

Together, these works offer two powerful and contrasting visions of the Romantic piano quintet.

Pianists from throughout the region gather to perform a free public concert celebrating American Piano Music for the enjoyment of
music lovers everywhere.

Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å Professor of Music, Dr. Joe Chapman, will present an afternoon of piano classics on Sunday, November 15 at 4:00 PM in the Hoag Student Center Auditorium, located on the University of North Georgia Dahlonega campus. The concert will feature the Liszt Sonata in B Minor performed on the university's beloved Steinway concert grand piano. Composed in 1854, this colossal work resides at the apex of piano repertoire - emanating from the successes of the classical masters and foreshadowing the advent of impressionism and neoromanticism. The Model D Steinway is the world-standard for piano performance, and its resonant tonal qualities and capacity for expression provide the perfect conduit for Chapman's range of technique from finesse in nuance to power in virtuosity. The program will also include works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Fauré. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

The All-State Clinic offers attending students an opportunity to participate in a master class with a member of the Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å Instrumental Faculty to prepare
excerpts for All-State auditions.

The event is free, however, advanced registration is required.
