Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å

The Academic Renewal Policy allows University System of Georgia (USG) undergraduate degree-seeking students who have experienced academic difficulty resulting in an overall GPA of 2.5 or lower to have one opportunity to start over, after an absence of three consecutive calendar years/36 consecutive months.  

Students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree are not eligible for Academic Renewal. Students who have earned an associate degree may be eligible for Academic Renewal if they are now seeking a bachelor’s degree. Students pursuing a second associate degree are not eligible for Academic Renewal. A student shall only be granted Academic Renewal one time in the USG, and once it is applied to a student’s record, it cannot be removed. If a student previously granted Academic Renewal by one USG institution is admitted or readmitted to another USG institution, the receiving institution shall honor the earlier Academic Renewal.   

Academic Renewal signals the initiation of a new grade point average to be used for determining academic standing and eligibility for graduation. The calculation of the renewal GPA begins after the student receives approval for Academic Renewal and includes all coursework taken since the student’s acceptance to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å. The academic renewal GPA will be displayed on the student’s academic record, including the official academic transcript. All previously attempted coursework and any previous academic suspensions and/or dismissals remain on the student’s permanent record, including the official academic transcript.  

Undergraduate students who are transferring to a USG institution or are returning to a USG institution after a three-year/36-month absence may be eligible for Academic Renewal. Students who do not request Academic Renewal status at the time of re-enrollment must do so within one year after enrollment.  

• Students seeking readmission to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å must be absent from the university for a minimum period of three years/36 months. Transfer credit for any coursework taken during the period of absence should be granted according to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å’s transfer credit policy, and as such, will still be included in the student’s GPA calculation.  
• Students transferring to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å from an institution of higher education accredited by one of the accrediting commissions listed in the Accredited Institutions section of the Academic Information page in the Undergraduate Catalog may be eligible for Academic Renewal, if there has been the minimum three-year/36-month absence required for Academic Renewal eligibility.  
  
  • Only coursework completed prior to the three-year/36-month period of eligibility can be considered for Academic Renewal.  
  • The period of eligibility is calculated from the date of enrollment at Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å.  
  • Courses taken more recently than the period of eligibility are ineligible for consideration for Academic Renewal. However, transfer credit can be granted for coursework taken during this period according to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å’s transfer credit policy. This coursework will still be included in the student’s GPA calculation. 
  • Students who have earned an associate degree and are now pursuing a bachelor’s degree shall only be eligible for Academic Renewal for their coursework completed after the award of their associate degree. Courses completed prior to the award date of the previously awarded credential are not eligible for Academic Renewal.  

For students who are granted Academic Renewal, academic credit for previously completed coursework will be retained only for courses in which an A, B, C, S, or K grade has been earned, including any applicable transfer coursework. Retained grades are not calculated into a student’s GPA. Retained coursework will be applied to the degree requirements according to the academic catalog in place at the time of reenrollment. Specific institutional program regulations must also be met, such as minimum GPA based upon all attempted coursework, since reentry into any academic degree program is not automatic. Courses with D, F, or WF grades that are required in the student’s degree program must be repeated at Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å. No transient credit for these required courses will be accepted.  Students who wish to earn a degree must still satisfy all graduation requirements, including the Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å residency requirements, after approval for Academic Renewal is granted. Coursework completed prior to the three-year/36-month absence cannot be used to satisfy residency requirements. At least 50% of all coursework applicable to the degree (at least 30 hours for an associate degree, at least 60 hours for a baccalaureate degree; may be more depending on individual degree program) must be completed at Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å after the granting of Academic Renewal status for a student to be eligible for Latin honors at graduation (e.g. cum laude, etc.). The granting of Academic Renewal does not supersede financial aid policies regarding Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Some law schools, medical schools, and graduate schools calculate their own GPA for admission, and are not subject to these rules on Academic Renewal. 

Only accepted Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å students are eligible to apply for Academic Renewal. If you have not yet applied and been admitted or readmitted to Â鶹¾«Æ·ÔÚÏß²¥·Å, please begin your application with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
